I love the social media transformation on the Internet. It's what marketing is all about, we market and sell ourselves and people begin to trust that we know what we're doing.

It's worth the effort!

Jan Verhoeff
http://janverhoeff.com

Re: Merry Christmas , Happy Hanukkah, etc. etc.!

Thanks, Bill. So true. There are so many people who spend time trying to figure out all the technology and are so obsessed with plug ins that they never generate any content. Same with cameras. The same people who asked me what kind of camera I use last year still have not taken any pictures. Just do it! If it doesn't work try something else.

Re: Nothing to Fear but Fear Itself

If anything, the truth is that the principles of Social Media are no different than the principles of Social Interaction we’ve follow for the past Century.

The one principle that is becoming ever-present in today's society is that of transparency and lack of control of the message. Consumers and employees are now (able to) demanding transparency and the message is being written by those outside the walls of the staid corporations.

Those companies that choose to cling to the vain attempt to control the message will fail. I think a lot of people psyche themselves out of expanding their SM reach because the are intimidated by technology. The reality is that there are a million different ways to express oneself and engage potential customers out there-pick the one (or two or four!) that fit your style and it will be a winner.

Re: Social Media is not about Technology

This is a good viewpoint to get people moving in the right direction, in my opinion. In fairness to technology (and the tech guy) we have to use technology but the plug-in/screen part is not really the point. Social media requires technology infrastructure, which in fact does plug in, but who cares. The reason most people hand it off to their tech guy is because of this same view of technology - gadgets, devices, wires, uber-geekdom. It's too bad because it is a bit like saying CSI and the 11 o' clock news are all about tubes, LCDs and universal remotes - and if you couldn't get past the flashing 12:00 back in the 80's you should probably pick up a book.

Re: 2 Ears & 1 Mouth - Take A Hint!

You don't walk into a room, run to shake hands and say "here's my product. You should by it!" Even if it is a "networking" event, that's just bad form! And nothing will earn you the tag as the person to avoid quicker.

I think that with any strategy, you start by "listening." Then it becomes of matter of deciphering that information and developing actionable items to move forward.
